How to fix a softlocked game in Dragon’s Dogma 2

Softlocking a game is when you maybe hit a glitch, get into a fatal situation, or make a game-breaking decision, and the save has you stuck in an endless loop. This happens in games with an auto-save feature and no backups, like Dragon’s Dogma 2. Here is how to fix a softlocked game in Dragon’s Dogma 2.

Reverting to an older save in Dragon’s Dogma 2

Usually, you can break free from a softlocked save in Dragon’s Dogma 2 by selecting the Load From Last Inn option. This will revert you back to the last inn you stayed at. This can be annoying, though, and will often lose hours of gameplay. I rarely stay in Inns because I use campsites or my various houses. Neither of these count as an Inn stay.

If you have managed to softlock Dragon’s Dogma 2 and don’t want to go all the way back to an Inn, you will have to go into the game files on your PC.

  • Simply close the game and head to C:\Program Files (x86)\Steam\userdata\ [your steam user id]\2054970\remote\win64_save, assuming you have the game stored on your C drive.
  • Delete the top three files.
  • Open Steam and disable Cloud Storage
  • Reopen the game, and you will be back a few autosave.

The problem with Dragon’s Dogma 2’s save feature

With most modern RPGs, it is possible to have multiple save files and the chance to overwrite any of them. There is a myriad of benefits to this, such as being able to avoid a softlock and exploring options without worrying about the consequences. This. however, it is considered by some to be save scumming.

I think what Capcom is trying to avoid is this save-scumming practice. By being able to constantly save and reload, no choices have real consequences. However, it can sometimes lead to game-breaking saves that have players stuck in situations, with the only out being losing hours of gameplay.

Finding a happy medium between the two is a tricky game. Either way, players will be annoyed with the decision.
