During the quest “Put a Spring in Thy Step,” you are tasked with escorting Gautstafr to the hot springs for his aching back. Gautstafr may go missing during this escort mission, and the game gives you zero indication of where he went.
That’s where this guide comes in. Read further to learn how to find Gautstafr if he goes missing in Dragon’s Dogma 2.
Where does Gautstafr go in Dragon’s Dogma 2?
If Gautstafr goes missing during your quest to bring him to the hot springs, there is a very good chance that he was killed in combat. To find Gautstafr’s body, head to the morgue in Bakbattahl and speak with the woman at the front desk. Give her 5000 coins to search for a body, and select Gautstafr.
After selecting Gautstafr at the front desk, the woman will light a candle for you on one of the nearby coffins. The candle represents where Gautstafr was laid to rest, so interact with the coffin and select the option to use a Wakestone.
After using the Wakestone, Gautstafr will return to his home on Agamen Volcanic Island and you can repeat the Put a Spring in Thy Step quest.
If you don’t have a Wakestone on you, search around the morgue and you’ll find Wakestone Shards in treasure chests (you need three shards to make one Wakestone).
If you didn’t even think of checking the morgue, don’t worry about it. I was going crazy trying to find Gautstafr on my in-game map, looking for the yellow waypoint, but it was nowhere to be found. Little did I know that NPCs can die in the game for good unless you go to the morgue.
How to escort Gautstafr to the hot springs
Since the path to the hot springs is filled with challenging enemies, it’s tough to protect Gautstafr. I recommend having two Sorcerers equipped with lightning, as the lizards are weak to that element and have a fighter or warrior to focus on the armored goblins.
I think the best strategy is to stay near Gautstafr the entire time during the escort. Doing this may be hard depending on your vocation, so it may be smart to take on the ranged role just for this mission. For example, maybe switch to the Archer vocation while you stand by Gautstafr’s side.
