Is FIFA 23’s change in chemistry for the better?

Every year, FIFA players hope for a couple of changes that will increase their enjoyment of the long-running EA franchise. And every year, some changes are made—though the results may vary. One such change to this year’s game lies within the chemistry system. For years, chemistry has been a big factor in building your ultimate team squad. This year promises to be no different, but we’re here to explain how chemistry works in FIFA 23.

The first thing players will notice with regards to how chemistry works in FIFA 23 is that the links of the past—be it red, yellow, or green—are no more. Instead, a points-based system has been introduced. Unfortunately, this has led to some early confusion as well as difficulties with regards to completing early in-game Squad Building Challenges (SBCs).

So here’s the gist: It no longer matters where players are in relation to one another on the field or in your squad. If your team happens to have a striker and goalkeeper from the same team or league—for the sake of this example, let’s say Harry Kane and Hugo Lloris—that combination is going to give your club chemistry. Likewise, if you’re building a league-specific squad, you’re team may eventually rise to full chemistry.

As you can see, this squad is not yet complete. But of the eight players in it, all of them represent the Premier League. Of those eight, four are English. You’ll notice the diamonds on the bottom-left of each card; three diamonds represent full player chemistry. If I were to add three more PL players to fill out this squad at GK, LB, and RM, then my chemistry points total would increase from 24 to 33.

For a further detailed breakdown, this is what players will have to keep in mind while constructing their squads:

  • 2 players from the same nation, region, or club: +1 chemistry point
  • 3 players from the same league: +1 chemistry point
  • 4 players from the same club: +2 chemistry points
  • 5 players from the same nation, region, or league: +2 chemistry points
  • 7 players from the same club: +3 chemistry points
  • 8 players from the same nation, region, or league: +3 chemistry points

So that’s that, FIFA fans—everything you need to know with regards to how chemistry in FIFA 23 works. Does this change feel a little unnecessary? Perhaps. Will it become an annoyance long-term? That remains to be seen.
