Last night, HBO Max took to social media to confirm the series. While little is known of the DC Comics show, it has been confirmed that the show will be “coming soon”.

Per a report from Variety, Lanterns will be led by showrunner Chris Mundy, who has in the past worked on True Detective: Night Country and Ozark. The series will consist of eight episodes.

Watchmen and The Leftovers writer Damon Lindelof and Mister Miracle and Supergirl writer Tom King will co-write and executive produce with Mundy.

Casey Bloys, chairman/CEO of HBO and Max Content said of the series: “As part of James [Gunn] and Peter [Safran]’s vision for the DC Universe, this first new live action series will mark an exciting new era.”

Lanterns will reportedly tell the story of Green Lantern Corps members Hal Jordan and John Stewart. In the series, Stewart will be a new recruit, while Jordan is a tenured veteran in the Corps. Both Lanterns are “drawn into a dark, earth-based mystery as they investigate a murder in the American heartland.”

A cast has yet to be announced, nor have episode directors.

The last on-screen Green Lantern was played by Ryan Reynolds in the 2011 film of the same name. The film was a flop, both commercially and critically. Several attempts at reviving the character for the big screen have fallen short since, though Nathan Fillion will play Green Lantern Guy Gardner in James Gunn’s upcoming Superman film, due for release next year.
