Gray Zone Warfare players learn there’s a unique way to get your loot back after you die

Dying in Gray Zone Warfare is punishing as you instantly lose your hard-earned spoils. However, that loss may not be as permanent as you think.

How to loot your dead body in Gray Zone Warfare

Gray Zone Warfare players have discovered that your body stays on the map when you die. This mechanic means you can die and then return to your body to retrieve your loot.

Your loot isn’t guaranteed; if another player takes your gear after beating you, it won’t be there when you return. In my limited testing, the mechanic seems to be a little inconsistent, even in the PvE mode.

I’ve died in the Joint Ops mode in the middle of nowhere, and my body has vanished by the time I’ve returned. It’s possible another player found my gear, but it’s doubtful. I’ve also read reports on the Steam forums of users experiencing the same thing. Unless the AI enemies rummage through your pockets when they beat you, your loot may sometimes disappear on its own.

Oddly enough, this looting mechanic isn’t uncommon in Extraction Shooters. If you play Escape From Tarkov and die as a PMC, you can sometimes find your body if you enter the same map as a Scav.

Are there any downsides to retrieving lost loot?

If you were holding valuable items when you died, it’s likely worth checking to see if it’s still there. That said, if this strategy becomes more common, smart players may capitalize on it.

If a team has beaten you, they’ll likely do it again and may camp around your body. It may sound silly, but as players already wait around landing zones, I wouldn’t be surprised if they also camp valuable gear.

The best way to retrieve lost gear is to have a kind squadmate clear the area and grab it for you. If you can’t play with your friends because you have joined different factions, you’ll be pleased to learn that you can swap. The swapping mechanic isn’t perfect, but it beats playing alone.
