GMB viewers fume ‘stop trying to change history’ after ‘offensive’ John Cleese debate | TV & Radio | Showbiz & TV

The Monty Python star is working on a stage production of the troupe’s 1979 comedy film, The Life of Brian, which parodies the Messianic message of the New Testament.

In the film version, the character Stan explains to his friends that he wishes to become a woman called “Loretta” and wishes to have babies.

John’s character Reg informs Stan it is “impossible” for him to achieve his dream, but has recently been met with a roadblock as some actors in the new show found the joke “offensive”.

Stan explained: “I want to be a woman. From now on, I want you all to call me Loretta. It’s every man’s right to have babies if he wants them,” before Reg snapped back: “You haven’t got a womb.”

Good Morning Britain presenters Susanna Reid and Richard Madeley were joined by two comedians who had opposing views as to whether the joke should be taken out of the script.

The first guest, Freddie, fumed: “Where do you stop? There is a scene about people with big noses, there is a scene with people blessing the cheese makers.

“Are we going to reach out to dairy farmers to see if they’re upset by it? No, we are just going to leave it be!”

The other guest snapped back: “If we are going to make jokes, we are asking about what the context is going to be.

“Obviously lots of people were mortally offended when Life of Brian first came out because they felt their religious beliefs were being challenged.

“I don’t think it was written with the intention of the Trans rights situation, I don’t think that is how it was written. If John Cleese wants to write something that actively does that then he is welcome to it.”

As the pair began to get more heated with the views beginning to clash even more, Richard was forced to step in and end the debate.

Viewers of the ITV show took to their Twitter accounts to express their own views and were furious with the debate.

@TracyBrownuk simply stated: “#GMB Stop trying to change history.”

@elacha123 fumed: “#GMB Get new actors who will say the lines. The Box Office will decide who wants to see it!!”

@BiBetty3 commented: “Stop changing things that were made in a very different time… pleaseeee! People will have an understanding of the content and if there is a risk of you being offended by it, don’t bloody go to see it! #GMB.”
