Furiosa: A Mad Max Saga Ending Explained

0

Furiosa: A Mad Max Saga is focused on the young woman Furiosa and how she became the person that we saw in Mad Max: Fury Road, but this saga also charts the rise and fall of the warlord Dementus, who spends nearly two decades rampaging all over the post-apocalyptic wasteland, causing all sorts of trouble and generally being a nuisance to everyone.

Warning: The rest of this article will be nothing but spoilers for the plot and ending of Furiosa: A Mad Max Saga. If you don’t what to know what happens, you should close this tab now.

It’s Dementus’s gang of bikers who pulled Furiosa from her home, a “place of abundance,” when she was a child and killed her mother–this is the film’s inciting incident, and the thing that sets Furiosa on her path.

But Furiosa isn’t in Dementus’s possession for very long–when he and his gang visit the Citadel for the first time, Dementus is forced to give Furiosa up to Immortan Joe. While Immortan Joe proved to be able to handle Dementus easily, the rest of the wasteland isn’t quite so prepared for this threat. After Dementus leaves the Citadel, he makes another attempt to establish his foothold by assaulting and taking over Gastown, which he would rule for many years.

But Dementus is, shockingly, not the best administrator, and Gastown doesn’t operate very efficiently under his rule, which angers everybody who uses Gastown’s services. And the beginning of the end for Dementus comes when Immortan Joe sends Furiosa and Praetorian Jack to the Bullet Farm to prepare for a siege on Gastown. But there’s one minor problem: Dementus has decided to take over the Bullet Farm, too, and he’s got an ambush waiting for Furiosa and Jack. After a long and extremely dope action sequence, the Bullet Farm is pretty much wrecked, and Furiosa and Jack are captured–Furiosa’s left arm gets mangled in the process. Jack is executed, but Furiosa is able to escape by tearing her own arm off.

Furiosa is too injured to actually get anywhere, though, but fortunately ole Mad Max, in a brief cameo, spots her and apparently brings her to the Citadel. After crawling out of the weird maggot pit she’s left in, Furiosa alerts Joe about what Dementus has done, and warns him to keep his forces at home–Dementus is going to attack the Citadel again. So Joe pretends to send a force to Bullet Farm, and Dementus attacks the Citadel. Dementus loses, and all his men are wiped out.

While Furiosa wasn’t able to participate in that fight because of her injuries, by the time it was over–several weeks later–she’s built herself that cool prosthetic arm, borrows a War Boy rig, and sets out after Dementus to finish him off. She tracks him down and captures him, but Dementus then soliloquies at length about how revenge doesn’t make you happy or whatever. Saying anything he can in hopes that she’ll spare him. It doesn’t work.

Dementus and the tree

And then Furiosa gets real: she takes that peach seed she’d been carrying around her whole life–the one from the green place that she originally came from–and uses Dementus’s living body to fertilize it, and it turns into a tree. Once the tree grows enough to produce fruit years later, Furiosa meets with Immortan Joe’s wives, and the events of Mad Max: Fury Road begin.

Does Furiosa: A Mad Max Saga have a post-credits scene?

Over the credits you’ll be treated to a montage of sick clips from Mad Max: Fury Road, but there isn’t any new content–no new bonus scenes or anything like that. Which makes sense. There’s nothing to tease because we’ve already seen what’s next for Furiosa.
