After winning the big one in 2022, FromSoftware has already come out swinging for 2023.

FromSoftware and Bandai Namco have released a new trailer for Armored Core VI: Fires Of Rubicon during The Game Awards 2022, along with an announcement that the game will be coming sometime in 2023. While publisher/developer FromSoftware’s dark medieval fantasy Elden Ring battled for some of the most sought-after prizes at the annual awards show, even claiming Game of the Year, the announcement regarding a new Armored Core game wasn’t the most expected, but it was warmly received by the live crowd in Los Angeles.

Armored Core VI has been generally flying under the radar despite its creators’ success with the Dark Souls series, and now with Elden Ring. The last major news regarding the sixth entry in the mecha series came back in January, and that was the result of a data leak involving screenshots showing up online. Some industry experts had expected the third-person shooter to be announced shortly following Elden Ring’s release, but the publisher/developer seems to have kept it as a closely-guarded secret as the game seemingly slid back through the cracks and out of people’s memories.

The trailer depicts a fiery hellscape spreading, shifting between close-up shots of a wall of fire consuming a tranquil forest to an ultra-wide angle that makes it look as though the whole planet will be engulfed. After the screen fades to black and displays the message “Feed the fire,” an opposite scenario is presented, with a barren field of snow and ice, and a single mech rises from the frozen wastes. From there, the action begins, displaying armaments from electrical arcs to missiles to miniguns.

The mecha shooter series has been around for a long time, premiering back in 1997. A futuristic departure from FromSoftwares other big hits, it has built up a fan base of its own over the past 25 years and five console generations.

Armored Core VI: Fires Of Rubicon is planned for release on PlayStation 4, PlayStation 5, Xbox One, Xbox Series X|S, and PC via Steam.
