Free Destiny 2 Eververse Armor Coming In Season 22, As Bungie Explains Changes

Following a state of the game update that didn’t go over well a few weeks ago, Destiny 2 players had some harsh criticism for developer Bungie on a number of topics. One such area where players felt underserved was in the ritual armor department, as Bungie said in its update at the time that delivering new ritual armor sets at a constant cadence was becoming “challenging” for the studio. As an apology for the poor communication in that feature, Bungie will give players a free set of armor from the Eververse store.

As for the original reasoning, Bungie originally wrote that “delivering ritual armor sets at the rates we have in the past has become increasingly challenging–especially considering these sets have historically had very low adoption by players as both base armor and cosmetic ornaments.”

Bungie did promise a new ritual armor set in Season 22, but for fans who felt that there was a lack of new Gambit, Crucible, and Vanguard outfits in Destiny 2 while the Eververse store was constantly updated with new armor ornaments that cost real money (via the in-game currency of Silver), that reasoning from Bungie didn’t hold a lot of water. In an update on Twitter, game director Joe Blackburn went into deeper detail about the state of ritual armor sets and why Bungie had begun to release fewer sets.

According to Blackburn, Lightfall’s exclusion of ritual armor was part of a decision to focus more on providing gear for high-level activities like raids, dungeons, and PvP modes like Trials of Osiris, while seasonal armor sets served as “moment in time” gear that tied into the seasonal narrative. Blackburn added that Bungie wants to release more intimate discussions about the game, but at the same time, the studio wants to keep its community members and leaders safe from the more toxic elements of the Destiny 2 fandom. Additionally, the studio is assembling a dedicated “strike team” to revitalize its PvP section and next year will see several new Crucible maps released all at once.

More details on the future of the game will be revealed in the Destiny 2 Showcase, which takes place on August 22.
