Breakups are always tough, even for massive corporations. At least, that’s the vibe I get from EA announcing that it’s parting ways with FIFA. That partnership went on for almost 30 years, though FIFA is by no means done with making games.
On Tuesday, FIFA announced it’s developing multiple ‘non-simulation’ soccer games with third-party studios that will launch in Q3 2022.
“I can assure you that the only authentic, real game that has the FIFA name will be the best one available for gamers and fans,” FIFA President Gianni Infantino said in a press release. “The FIFA name is the only global, original title. FIFA 23, FIFA 24, FIFA 25, and FIFA 26, and so on – the constant is the FIFA name, and it will remain forever and remain the best.”
There’s a thin layer of shade thrown at EA Sports FC in that statement, eh? Interesting, since both companies as still working together on FIFA 23, which comes out this fall.
“The interactive gaming and esports sector is on a path of unrivaled growth and diversification,” Infantino continues. “FIFA’s strategy is to ensure we can make the most of all future options and ensure a wide range of products and opportunities for gamers, fans, member associations, and partners.”
FIFA didn’t clarify what third-party studios it’s partnering with, but that information will likely come later on.
