Lola Pearce (played by Danielle Harold) took her last breath on Wednesday with young daughter Lexi Pearce (Isabella Brown) sleeping by her side.

While the family will face a tough time grieving the young woman, schoolgirl Lexi, in particular, will be struggling with the bereavement.

EastEnders viewers were left in floods of tears following the emotional scenes, which continued on Thursday as Lexi’s dad Ben Mitchell (Max Bowden) raced home from America.

She’d had to face the ordeal without her dad, who was attempting to find a last-ditch attempt to prolong Lola’s life.

Ben made a tearful apology to his daughter on Thursday and eventually, she seemed to forgive him.

Official spoilers for the BBC soap suggest Lexi will start to struggle to open up about her grief.

In scenes yet to air, Ben attempts to help his daughter through the tragedy.

Having sold The Arches, he focuses all his attention on Lexi, but she isn’t opening up.

He decides to take her for ice cream and tries to get her excited about going to see Callum Highway (Tony Clay), but all Lexi wants to do is go home to Jay Brown (Jamie Borthwick) and get into bed.

Callum advises him to brave the subject of Lola and to allow grieving Lexi to talk about her mum.

Ben and Jay then have an emotional afternoon with Lexi and encourage her to talk about her feelings.

Their efforts help Lexi to finally open up about what she is going through.

Later, Jay invites Kim Fox (Tameka Empson) and Billy Mitchell (Perry Fenwick) over to share out more items from Lola’s memory box with Ben.

As his friends try to give Jay the strength to go on, it’s clear he’s faltering in the midst of this all-consuming grief.

Will the others be able to help Jay to get through the tragic event?

Despite Lexi opening up, she may not have completely forgiven her dad for not being there when Lola died.

Can the grieving family find a way through the darkness and allow others to support them?

With Lexi finally talking about how she feels, perhaps the youngster will be able to encourage her adoptive father Jay to do the same.

EastEnders continues on Monday at 7.30pm on BBC One.
