Coronation Street’s Elaine Jones (played by Paula Wilcox) stormed into Weatherfield as Tim Metcalfe’s (Joe Duttine) mother, but recently left viewers confused after finding out the actress’s age.

Elaine made her arrival when Yasmeen Metcalfe (Shelley King) was behind bars after attacking her abusive husband Geoff Metcalfe (Ian Bartholomew).

She later revealed herself as Geoff’s ex and someone who he also coercively controlled, being part of the trial on putting him away for life, however, he managed to walk free.

Recently, Elaine has been at the heart of a storyline featuring the murderous Stephen Reid (Todd Boyce) as the pair are engaged, planning their wedding and living together.

She remains unaware that he has killed three people and is using her name in a life insurance scam.

Stephen even made attempts on Elaine’s life, swapping her blood pressure pills for caffeine ones, hoping to cash in on her insurance money – but thankfully she’s back to full health.

If Elaine and Stephen manage to walk down the aisle without any drama, Elaine will become Audrey Roberts’ (Sue Nicholls) mother-in-law.

This left some viewers of the show stunned and took to their Twitter to discuss the character’s ages and Paula’s in real life.

Actress Paula Wilcox is 73, whilst Sue Nicholls is 79, leaving many to be stunned at their closeness in age.

Karen M Renton commented: “Woah… Audrey is going to be Elaine’s mother in law. I just realised. They look the same age! #Corrie.”

In upcoming scenes, Elaine decides to invite her Tai Chi instructor Gerry over for a chat when they’re all at the Bistro to celebrate Sally Metcalfe’s (Sally Dynevor) birthday.

Stephen is left clearly annoyed with Elaine’s kind gesture as the duo’s friendship blossoms but decides not to say anything.

Later on in the week, Sally, her husband Tim, Steve McDonald (Simon Gregson) and Ed Bailey (Trevor Michael Georges) all decide to attend Gerry’s class.

Elaine is in her element enjoying her new fitness lifestyle and is left thrilled when Gerry suggests they all meet later on for a bite to eat.

This could be a new start for Elaine and a chance to get away from scheming Stephen, but will he let his plan to cash in slip away so easily?
