Fans of the farming board game will get to settle the land and show off their achievements on Playstation and XBox February 28.
Console board gaming Settlers of Catan will make its way to Playstation and Xbox systems February 28 with basic and deluxe purchase options of CATAN – Console Edition. Players can settle their land, grow crops, mine ore, and herd sheep on the same differently colored hexagons they know and love from the modern classic tabletop game.
The Catan franchise has seen a variety of digital skins over its 25-year-plus existence. It has been adapted into such titles as Developer Experiment 7’s Catan VR and Niantic’s short-lived Catan World Explorers AR game. While a Switch version of Catan has been available since 2019, and the virtual reality title is still available to Playstation VR and VR2 users, this will be the game’s first official foray into the Playstation and Xbox markets as a console title. Though based on the same licensed franchise, the previous video games will not be compatible with CATAN – Console Edition.
In a Dev Diary video, DoveTail Games producer Natalie “Nat” Dodds described how players will be able to experience Catan in a whole new way. Cosmetic rewards such as dice skins and character frames can be achieved through regular gameplay, and Dodds teases the challenges players will face against the game’s dynamic AI in single player mode. “Some of them are really going to give you a tough game, whether it be that they reject some of your trades or they try and disrupt your road,” she said.
CATAN – Console Edition will also feature local and online multiplayer modes to test your mettle against other humans. Different setups add another challenge unique to the console editions. In local, players can use their phones to review their resources privately in lieu of having them up on the common screen. Online multiplayer for the game will feature cross-play so that anyone on any console can play against each other.
For those looking for more right out of the gate, CATAN – Console Edition will also be available in a Deluxe version that will include five CATAN World Championship board layouts taken from five previous CATAN World Championship events. Both CATAN – Console Edition and CATAN – Console Edition: Deluxe can be wishlisted now for Playstation 4, Playstation 5, XBox Series X|S, and Xbox One. Anyone who pre-orders the game on any of these consoles beginning on February 3 will be able to play it via early access beginning February 23 before the game’s official release on February 28.
