Beyond Good &Evil 20th Anniversary Edition Confirmed to be Coming Early 2024

The action-adventure game Beyond Good & Evil 20th Anniversary Edition has an unusual unveiling recently as some saw the game briefly appear on the subscription service Ubisoft+. The version was at least partly playable with players claiming it’s playable in 4K. Videos of the gameplay appeared online but have been swiftly taken down by Ubisoft copyright.

Adding further fuel to the flames the game also was listed on the Xbox store. It was since removed with a Ubisoft sharing it was a “technical error”. Finally, Ubisoft officially announced on X (Twitter) that a 20th anniversary edition will be coming in early 2024.

A few details were shared while the listing was up, from the premature release of the edition it supports 4K. Other details include 60fps support, new rewards, new speedrun mode and updated achievements. Ubisoft will be announcing more news about the special edition in future according to the tweet.

What is Beyond Good & Evil?

In case you missed it, the action-adventure game was originally released in 2003. It follows an investigative reporter called Jade who is on the path to exposing a government conspiracy that would hopefully save her planet and those living there. The game follows a combination of stealth mechanics, combat and puzzle-solving. Not only armed with a dai jo staff and camera but also her wits to blow this whole thing wide open.

What About Beyond Good and Evil 2?

In 2017 Ubisoft announced the beloved cult classic would be gaining a second title in Beyond Good and Evil 2. However, not much has been seen about the next game apart from the reveal trailer. The first title left players with a cliffhanger, with lots of unanswered questions. According to Ubisoft the game is set to be a prequel to the events of the first, even before Jade is born. Although it’s set before the first title, the developer promises to honour the original characters in some shape or form.

Unfortunately Beyond Good and Evil 2 seems to be one of those games stuck in development hell. There were some updates through Ubisoft’s Space Monkey Program, giving a little behind-the-scenes but have since slowed down. Sad news struck earlier this year with the passing of the creative director Emile Morel.

AAA games do take a lot longer than in the past to create. Now with modern hardware and a multitude of PC setups to cater for. However, by this point an update on the project would be great for fans, just to know that it’s still happening. Reports last year have implied the game is still in the pre-production phase and still going ahead. There has also been some investigations into the development studio. News of a Netflix movie adaptation back in 2020 was also announced.

With the 20th-anniversary edition now popping up, this triggers questions of whether we’ll be seeing more of the sequel at some point.
