Best Pokemon for Blastoise Tera Raid in Pokemon Scarlet and Violet

Blastoise is a brutal Tera Raid opponent with a nasty typing combo that shuts down many traditional counters. If you’re struggling to beat this Gen I classic, here’s the best Pokemon for the Blastoise Tera Raid in Pokemon Scarlet and Violet.

Best Pokemon to use in the Blastoise Tera Raid

Blastoise has the Steel Tera Type and an extended moveset with some cheeky extras for coverage. Here’s what you’re up against:

Blastoise Moveset

Tera Type: Steel

  • Withdraw
  • Flash Cannon
  • Hydro Pump
  • Aura Sphere
  • Iron Defense
  • Rain Dance
  • Shell Smash

I recommend using Vaporeon for this Tera Raid, but the moveset is essential. Bringing a Water type to fight Blastoise may seem counter-intuitive, but I’ll show you the moves and why it works so well.

Tera Type: Ground
Nature: Modest
EV Spread: 252 SP Attack / 252 SP Defense
Ability: Water Absorb
Item: Metronome

  • Calm Mind
  • Surf
  • Tera Blast
  • Fake Tears

I used a less effective version of this moveset in a group, but credit for this lethal combination goes to u/lumfdoesgaming on Reddit.

Vaporeon’s Water Absorb ability is the star of the show in this battle, as it makes Water-type attacks heal you.

The Strategy is pretty simple: Open by using Calm Mind three times, followed by three Surfs. Once you’ve landed your Surfs, Terrastalize. You’ll do more damage, but most importantly, you’ll change the typing of your Tera Blast. Use Tera Blast until Blastoise nullifies your stat changes.

With your stats reset, Blastoise will use Shell Smash. Counter this with Fake Tears, as it will reduce Blastoise’s defenses. You’re at the finish line now, so buff your stats again with Calm Mind and finish with Tera Blast.

I’ve seen multiple users report success with other Pokemon with the Water Absorb ability. While I’ve not tested them myself, the ability shuts down Blastoise’s offensive game, so there are likely several decent candidates for the Raid.

The moveset above works so well you can even beat the Tera Raid solo with some luck.

How to play the Blastoise Tera Raid in Pokemon Scarlet and Violet

If you’re new to raiding, let me show you how to access the Tera Raid. First, you must have an active Nintendo Switch Online account.

Start your game on Pokemon as usual and access the Pokeportal from the main menu (X). Press ‘L’ (the left shoulder button) and wait a few seconds to connect to the Internet.

From here, you have a couple of options. You can search for active Tera Raids, including Blastoise, from the Poke Portal menu. If you’d prefer to fight Blastoise alone or be the party leader, you must find Blastoise on your map.

The icon you’re looking for appears randomly and looks like the one pictured above. Remember that you must connect to the Internet for the Raid to show up, but you can disconnect afterward. Raid Pokemon are coveted creatures to add to your collection. While they aren’t as rare as Shinies, Raid Pokemon often boast great stats and useful movesets for endgame content.
