Honkai: Star Rail features a multitude of unique characters for you to obtain and use in some intense battles. Fortunately for players, there are also a large number of free characters as well. One of these free characters is Herta, who you obtain while completing the Simulated Universe. Herta is an Erudition unit and specializes in AoE damage. Herta, however, struggles in single-target scenarios such as boss content, which lowers her effectiveness against much of the content in the game. Best build for Herta in Honkai: Star Rail: Relics, Light Cones, Eidolons, and Abilities
Herta is an Ice Erudition character that has a unique passive, allowing her to execute a follow-up attack whenever any enemy drops below 50% HP. Her damage is otherwise somewhat on the lower side, but as her talent is so limiting, this can diminish her usefulness in certain fights. That being said, we can equip her with the best gear to ensure that she can perform to her fullest potential, regardless of where you decide to slot Herta in.

Herta takes advantage of Erudition Light Cones that increase her damage:
- Before Dawn: Jing Yuan’s signature weapon is also Herta’s best weapon, increasing her Crit DMG by a whopping 36% while also increasing her Skill and Ultimate DMG by 18%. Herta also gains a 48% damage increase to her follow-up attack, but you have to use Herta’s Skill or Ultimate before her follow-up attack executes. As such, you’ll want to use her Ultimate at the start of the fight to trigger this buff, ensuring that she doesn’t execute her follow-up attacks too early.
- The Birth of the Self: This is Herta’s signature weapon and focuses purely on boosting her follow-up damage. This increases the damage of Herta’s follow-up attacks by 24%, with an additional 24% if the enemy is below or equal to 50% HP. This means Herta will always gain a minimum 48% boost to her follow-up attacks, as her follow-up attack only procs when the enemy is below 50% HP. When you reach maximum superimposition for this Light Cone, this damage boost can increase to a whopping 96%.
- The Seriousness of Breakfast: This is Herta’s best free-to-play option in case you do not have The Birth of the Self on hand. This increases Herta’s DMG by 12% and her ATK by 4% per enemy defeated, up to 3 times.

- For her 4-piece set, use the Hunter of Glacial Forest set. This set boosts Herta’s Ice DMG and her Crit DMG after using her Ultimate, which is a big DPS increase for Herta. This will also synergize nicely if you happen to have Before Dawn for Herta, with stacking Crit DMG and Ultimate DMG buffs.
- For her 2-piece set, use the Inert Salsotto set. This will boost Herta’s Crit Rate and additionally provide a damage boost to her Ultimate and follow-up attacks. This can turn Herta into a spinning monster, with tons of damage buffs coming her way.
- Herta has some decent Eidolons that can increase her potential damage. Her Eidolon 2 increases her Crit Rate by 3% every time her talent is triggered, which is better against many enemies. Eidolon 4 provides an additional 10% DMG increase every time her talent is triggered. Finally, her Eidolon 6 provides a flat 25% ATK boost when Herta uses her Ultimate.
