He advises fans to consider the story as a whole, not just the characters

Bayonetta 3 director Hideki Kamiya has taken to Twitter today to address the controversy surrounding the game’s writing and, especially, the ending. He has also teased that the next Bayonetta game will continue along the same line, and he asks fans to not give in to misinterpretations about the work.

In his tweet, Kamiya addressed a fan who called the ending “unexpected” by saying that description is simply untrue and that it’s anything but unexpected. He believes that no one has gotten the last part of Bayonetta 3’s story correctly, and he foresees that fans will accuse him of retconning the events in the future and adding different interpretations or excuses for already established plot lines. Kamiya also stated that outraged fans who hated Bayonetta 3 to the point of uncontrollable anger or madness should not touch the series in the future, as he is not counting on them as potential targets, and he will continue to write the story he sees fit for Bayonetta 4 and beyond.

He also refers to his earlier thread about the concept of “misinterpretation”, saying that he is very welcoming of those who think differently about his creations or even expand on them through fanworks, but at the same time, he feels very troubled by those who throw aggressive tantrums and cause severe discord due to their restrictive views. He also doesn’t want to interact with people who judge a story based on the characters alone, and who disregard other elements such as worldview, art design, and of course, the story (which he writes himself).

The controversy Kamiya is addressing refers to the reveal of a multiverse in the world of Bayonetta, which is caused by a being known as the singularity. This reveal has recontextualized every Bayonetta in the series as her own individual character and has redefined the world of the trilogy as a whole. The three umbra witches from different games (or realities) join together and rush to the aid of Viola — the new character and, eventually, the next Bayonetta in line — leading to Viola becoming the new story protagonist as hinted in the post-credit scene.

The multiple revelations have been deemed as retconning by many some fans who accuse Kamiya of adding things that don’t have any grounded basis or weren’t hinted at earlier in the series.
