Avowed Studio Shares Why Player Character Creation is Limited to Human or Elf

It looks like players will only get to choose either to play as a Human or Elf in upcoming RPG Avowed. In an interview with Obsidian and IGN, they explained the reasons behind this limited choice. This means players won’t be allowed to choose any of the other races for their main character, such as the Aumaus, Dwarves, Orland and no Godlikes.

Troubles with First Person Perspective

The game’s director Carrie Patel explained that the reasoning behind only a couple of races for choice is down two particular reasons. Firstly it’s down to story choice and also down to the Avowed’s first-person perspective. Due to the narrative following the Aedyr Empire, it will be mainly made up of humans and elves. Those who are familiar with the Pillars of Eternity universe will know about this as part of the lore.

Avowed will limit players to choosing either human or elf for character creation. Obsidian explains why they made this decision.
Players won’t be able to take up the Aumaua in Avowed as their main character but they will appear in Companions.

Loyal to Lore

The second reason is due to the perspective that players will be viewing in gameplay. As the game is in first person, this makes having different species a bit more difficult to implement due to the “variation in size”. Patel went on to explain this is much easier to adopt in an isometric game such as Pillars.

And one of the things about the species of Pillars that I think is a lot easier to account for in an isometric game is just the variation in sizes. You have aumaua and then you have humans and elves who are at roughly the same scale, and then you have orlans and dwarves who are quite a bit smaller. And for each of those, especially in first person, you’re adjusting the height of the player character’s capsule and sort of where their weapons are relative to enemies and how their hits land and how hits land on them.

While it might not have been “impossible” to solve the issue of varying heights and sizes for different races, Patel explained that ultimately they had to look at the “priorities and development” first. While you might be disappointed you won’t be able to recreate your favourite Pillars characters in Avowed, it’s understandable when the reasons are not only based on story but also functionality. But different race will still be present as previously it was revealed that the Coastal Aumaua companion called Kai will be joining in the game.
