Avatar 3 Won’t Have Sully As Narrator

Avatar: The Way of Water and its predecessor embedded audiences into Pandora through Jake Sully, played by Sam Worthington. But that won’t be the case for the third film or the other sequels, says director James Cameron.

Avatar 3 will feature a different narrator, specifically Sully’s second-oldest son Lo’ak. Cameron appeared on Soundtracking With Edith Bowman (via Variety) and apparently let it slip about the shakeup for the next three sequels. The director started by explaining that he might “fine-tune [Avatar 3] a bit to emphasize that which people are responding to [in Avatar: The Way of Water].”

From here, Cameron opened up about Avatar’s future. “For example, Lo’ak really emerged as a character that people went with,” he said. “So I might find ways to… he’s already the narrator. I’m giving away something here, but this is OK. I think it could be intriguing for people to think about what’s coming. Jake was our voiceover narrator for movie one and for movie two, and we have a different narrator for each of the subsequent films. We see it through the eyes of a different character. Movie three is through Lo’ak’s eyes.”

Lo’ak, portrayed by actor Britain Dalton, gets a good amount of spotlight in Avatar: The Way of Water. He forms a bond with the tulkun Payakan and also seems to be developing a romantic relationship with Tsireya, daughter of the Metkayina clan leaders. She’s played by actress Bailey Bass.

This isn’t the first time Cameron has teased something about the sequels. He previously mentioned Avatar 3 will introduce evil Na’vi named the Ash People. On top of that, the director also mentioned Avatar 5 will go to Earth, if it gets made–which it will because Avatar 2 is easily profitable at this point. The Way of Water has now made over $1.9 billion at the global box office.
