Although the battling system itself isn’t too complicated, there are a few things you can learn to improve the damage you deal to your opponents. Here’s everything you’ll need to get started.

Basic Attack

The first thing you’ll need to learn when battling in Atelier Ryza 3 is a basic attack. You will immediately learn this at the beginning of the game, which only requires you to tap the left mouse button to perform it once your AP gauge is full. This is the gauge on the bottom right, below the characters and the skill prompt. You can also create a basic attack chain by hitting the basic attack button three times in a row.

Once you have the basic attack and basic attack chain down, you’ll be able to start including skills in your battle as well. To do this, you will need to perfectly time your three basic attacks beforehand.

Skills

When you first begin the game, each individual character will have two Special Skills unique to them that you can use on top of your Basic Attack. In order to perform a skill, you’ll need to first complete three perfectly-timed basic attacks, and then hold down Space immediately after, and either choose the ‘S’ key or right mouse button. Each character has different skills, but as an example, Ryza has Burning Strike for her ‘S’ skill, and Shining Strike as her right mouse button skill. Some of these skills will also deal magic damage rather than physical damage, which can be incredibly important when defeating enemies with particular abilities.

You can also perform Skill Chains, meaning that right after you activate one skill after completing three basic attacks, you can immediately activate the other skill to deal a massive amount of damage to your opponent.

Shielding

Sometimes in battle, you want to be able to attack your opponent, but your AP is not full yet. In this time, the enemy’s gauge can fill up, allowing them to attack you instead. When you are in this position, you’ll want to be prepared and shield yourself.

To do this, all you will need to do is press the right mouse button. It is important to note that you will want to time your shielding perfectly to defend yourself as good as possible and prevent further damage. Right when it looks like the enemy is about to attack you, activate your shield.

Quick Action

If you’d rather get in a hit immediately without having to shield yourself, this is where the Quick Action comes in. In order to perform a Quick Action, however, you will need to spend 10 AP upfront. Keep in mind, though, that Quick Actions can only allow you to use items to attack the enemy. So, if you have a bomb in your arsenal, this is the best time to use it.

Core Items

Now that you are aware of the ability to use a Quick Action, you’ll want to learn more about the items you can use during this. These will be Core Items, which you can synthesize and create yourself. To use these items, just press the ‘S’ key immediately and the menu will open up.

Here, you will either see blank spaces or a few Core Items that you have equipped for that character. You can equip Core Items in the Battle Preparation page in the main menu. Some Core Items you can make include Bombs, Ice Bombs, Explosive Uni, Craft, Plajig, and more. Each of these items will deal a different amount of damage and sometimes an element, and some will be for a single target and others for multiple targets. Any of your characters can equip a multitude of these Core Items.

Character Toggling

A little bit into the game, you’ll start picking up teammates that will join you in battle and on your adventures. When you’d like to utilize their skills for yourself, you can swap out Ryza for one of your other teammates. To do this, you’ll just want to click the corresponding button for each character. For example, click the ‘R’ key for Bos, and the ‘Q’ key for Tao. This is a great way to make use of every character’s unique abilities.

Support Mode & Aggressive Mode

There are two different modes that you can switch between in battle: Support Mode, and Aggressive Mode. When in Aggressive Mode, your character and allies will use skills and items. In Support Mode, they will instead build up AP and CC (Core Charge), which is needed to use items.

It is incredibly important to utilize these modes as much as possible, especially if you notice that your team is lacking in AP or CC. That means it’s time to take it out of Aggressive Mode and focus on Support Mode to build your team back up. Though it might seem easier to stay on Aggressive Mode, you’ll tire out your characters and they’ll fall behind.

Switch Skill

As you work together with your teammates more and more, you’ll find there’s a lot you can do together to deal powerful damage. One of the best things to do when your current character is still building up AP is to perform a Switch Skill. This will allow you to swap with the character behind you and let them use their Skill on your current target. Along with this, you can also perform an additional skill and create a Skill Chain.

To perform a Switch Skill, you will notice a button prompt next to your active character with two arrows spinning around it. Press and hold Shift, and then click the ‘S’ key to bring out the labeled character. They will then take your spot and perform their skill on your opponent, and they will become your current active character.

Action Orders

When in combat with your teammates, you might notice a few prompts at the bottom of your screen, with a character’s image next to it. This might say something like, ‘Deal physical damage’ or ‘Deal magic damage’. If you swap to the character depicted in the prompt, and perform the condition requested of them like dealing physical damage, that character will be able to use an Order Skill.

To perform these, look at the prompts at the bottom of your screen. For example, if there’s one with Lent’s image next to it, swap over to him as your active character. If it says to deal physical damage, use one of his normal attacks or physical damage skills to complete the order. Once you finish all the ones currently on your screen, you’ll be able to use the Order Skill.
