Antiques Roadshow expert Ronnie Archer Morgan was left stunned in a historic episode of the BBC series when a guest brought in a “rare” collection with a staggering value. The roadshow went to Ebrington Square in Derry/Londonderry in the west of Northern Ireland.

Experts of the show were shown items such as bestowed by a Chinese emperor, an amethyst pendant a trophy for the sport of hurling that was forgotten for over a century and a painting that was only commissioned after its subject won top prize in a dog show.

It was Ronnie who was left stunned when a guest came in with her collection of compact purses and was left speechless by the value.

Taking a look at the beautiful pieces on the table, Ronnie noted: “Could it be said that you’re an obsessive collector by any chance?

The guest laughed and said: “No I don’t think it is obvious,” leaving Ronnie to quip: “Not obvious at all, with all of these! And how many more have you got?”

She continued: “Probably over 1000. I am very cautious. The story is, I was married in 1973, we had a house but no furniture.

“I went to an auction, and bought a cardboard box full of things and one of them was a deco powder tint and I fell in love with that and this is the result.”

Ronnie noted: “And these are your babies?” to which the guest agreed: “Yes these are my babies, it is quite an assortment.”

Taking a closer look, Ronnie described: “We have a range here, we have the most beautiful silver enamel and we have a whaky triangular one.

“This is all about elegance, this is all about style and glamour. These ones here, they are all about 1910, they are Edwardian.

“You have other ones here, 1920, 1950s, so a lady would go out for her evening dinner and she would be on show, everyone would be looking.

“This would go on her finger, that is a thing of beauty. This is amazing. Very rare, you have got the jewelled thumb press there and you have the sapphire there to open this compartment.

“This was about the Jazz Age, modernism, elegance and Hollywood and they’re fantastic. It keeps all the essentials in the little compartments.

“We have got to top the value of these up and it is quite difficult, but I know that would be £900, and this one would be £700.

“This would be £900, this little duo. We are talking on the table here, £5,000,” leaving the guest to gasp in shock and exclaim: “Oh my god, oh right. And I have three daughters speeding to the house now.”

Ronnie laughed and joked: “Make sure they don’t see this recording. It has been a delight just looking at these.

“I would like more time to go through them and study them and enjoy them and love them like you,” before she sweetly said: “Oh Ronnie you are so sweet.”

Antiques Roadshow is available to watch on BBC iPlayer.
