When I was first playing Fortnite Chapter 5, I thought the Yellow Circle on the map was weather patterns and that was where the sun was shining. However, that’s not what the Yellow Circle indicated; here’s what it really means.
What is the Yellow Circle in Fortnite?
The Yellow Circles aren’t weather patterns, anti-storm rings, or anything like that. The Yellow Circles on your map in Fortnite indicate a player that has a Medallion.

Medallions are dropped from one of the five bosses. These bosses are part of a group called Society and they are marked on your map. Their locations are Snooty Steppes, Lavish Lair, Reckless Railways, Fencing Fields, and Grand Glacier.
Every Medallion is the same. They are extremely powerful because they allow you to replenish your shields automatically over time. The only downside to Medallions is your location is marked on the map for everyone to see.
When I first picked up a Medallion, I was nervous seeing the message about my location being revealed, but in all reality, your location is revealed as a big Yellow Circle that has a wide radius. It works almost identically to a Bounty Contract, but it works for the entire lobby to see. While you do need to be extra cautious when you have it, because enemy players could travel to your location to hunt you down, the Yellow Circle indicator isn’t too bad.
The only counter to the Yellow Circle is to hide really well. If you are hidden well, when enemies do travel to your location, you’ll have the jump on them plus the active bonus you’re getting from the Medallion. This gets harder as the circle closes, but as long as you have good weapons and mobility, good cover, and a good vantage point, you’ll likely win in the end regardless of the Yellow Circle.
