Xbox Series X|S India Launch “Most Successful” in Microsoft’s History, Country Is “Key Growth Area” for Xbox

Microsoft has revealed that the Xbox Series X and S launch was the best its seen in the country. This should bode well for future prospects of Xbox in India in terms of availability and restocks to name a few. The company made these statements to IGN India following our report of the Xbox Series S being India’s most popular console in March.

“We’ve seen overwhelming demand from our fans for our new Xbox consoles,” a spokesperson for Microsoft India tells us over email. “The Indian gaming audience is one of the world’s biggest gaming markets and remains a key growth area for the Xbox business. The interest and enthusiasm we are seeing from fans locally is a testament to the growth of gaming in the Indian region and the appetite for newer, different, world-class experiences.”

While Microsoft doesn’t break out sales figures it did give us an indication of how well the Xbox Series X and S have done in India.

“We’re pleased to share that the launch of Xbox Series X and Series S was the most successful in our history,” says a spokesperson from the company of its India launch.

It’s interesting to see Microsoft take India seriously with a day one Xbox Series X|S launch in line with the rest of the world. More so when the Xbox One hit India a year late. The company told us that coordinating such a move was a substantial challenge. Considering the ongoing coronavirus pandemic, this should come as no surprise. Microsoft’s success in India however, is.

Now, by and large, India is PlayStation country. To the point where Sony openly admits to having 90 percent of the nation’s console market share. This seems to be changing.

According to multiple retailers across India, the best-selling console in March 2021 was the Xbox Series S followed by the Series X. The smaller, less powerful next-generation console from Microsoft launched alongside the more powerful Xbox Series X on November 10, 2020 in India and has seen frequent restocks. Which has not been the case with Sony’s PS4 or PS5.

Every retailer we spoke to told us that the lack of PS4 and PS5 compelled customers to pick up the Xbox Series S instead. At the same time, February and March had a slew of Xbox-specific announcements such as a wealth of Bethesda titles now on Xbox Game Pass and indies aplenty also showing up on Microsoft’s subscription service both of which they claim, played a role in customers choosing the Xbox Series S.

“Most of them showed up to buy a PS4,” says one store executive on the condition of anonymity. “When we told them it was out of stock and explained to them what Game Pass is and how many games they get access to, they picked up a Series S instead.”

This isn’t just the case offline either. Several online retailers have seen an uptick in Xbox Series S sales while the console has routinely been on Amazon India’s best-selling list too.
