Witcher 3 Wild Hunt Geralt 2

CD Projekt Red has announced the release window for the upgraded next-generation console version of The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt. Again.

Despite several previous delays, the next-gen version is now due to arrive before the year is out. CD Projekt Red has stated it’ll drop in the fourth quarter of this year so it could well be released at 11.59pm on New Years Eve. However, we have our fingers crossed we’ll at least get our hands on it before Christmas.

So why do we think CDPR is actually going to deliver? Mainly because it has taken development of the next-gen version in-house. Previously, it was being handled by Russian developer Saber Interactive, though CDPR has yet to state just why it was taken back. It’s possible that Russia’s invasion of the Ukraine was a factor. Or, given previous delays, it may have been that CDPR felt the studio was underperforming.

Whatever the reason, Xbox Series X and PS5 owners will have the opportunity to explore monster-slayer Geralt’s world in glorious next-gen-o-vision. You can expect, at least, a high-performance mode and a high-fidelity mode, giving you the choice of playing The Witcher 3 at 60FPS or having it look absolutely gorgeous.

The next-gen version will be available as a free upgrade for both Xbox Series X/S and PS5, though it’ll probably also get a disc version at some point.

However, if you’re a PS4 or PS5 owner who doesn’t own The Witcher 3, you should buy it right now. The Game of the Year Edition, which includes the base game and all expansions/extra content is a measly $9.99 on the US PlayStation store and £6.99 on the UK PlayStation store, up until May 26th.

In other words, you can purchase it for a pittance and get the next-gen upgrade when it’s released. You can check out our review here if you’ve not experienced The Witcher 3 yet and want to know why it’s such a must-have for RPG fans.
