Bears are important to a couple of different missions in Far Cry 5, and since the game takes place in Montana, they are definitely abundant. There are a good amount of grizzly bear hunting grounds in particular in the rustic and detailed open world of Hope County, and you can sell grizzly skins for hefty prices in the shop. If you’re low on funds, a grizzly bear skin will definitely fill your wallet.
Wondering where to locate grizzly bears and what to do with them once you find them? Here, we’ve put together all grizzly hunting locations, tips on how to kill them, and two missions that involve grizzlies. With these tips and tricks, you’ll be harvesting grizzly skins in no time.
Holland Valley Locations
There are two grizzly hunting locations in Holland Valley (John’s territory), and they’re both around the crop circle area. One location is directly west of the crop circles. The other is a bit more southwest of the circles, near Deadman’s River’s northward curve.
Whitetail Mountains Locations
In the Whitetail Mountains (Jacob’s territory), there are four grizzly bear hunting locations. There is an area north of the Jefferson Lookout Tower, and one west of the North Park entrance. There are two more located northwest of Cooper Cabin across the lake and east of Haskell Lookout Tower.
How To Kill Grizzly Bears
Grizzlies can be deadly, and they’re tougher than the average black bear when attempting to take one down. If you want to harvest the skins undamaged, you can’t use explosives, so the best course of action is to equip a powerful gun and just load the bear full of lead.
There are a few guns that are beneficial when facing down a grizzly. The MBP .50 or SA-50 sniper rifle are good choices, as well as the AKM assault rifle, M60, or M249 light machine gun. Shotguns aren’t recommended, as they’re a little too slow, but there are great uses for shotguns in other situations. The best strategy is to aim for the head, but also use Boomer to your advantage. He can distract and stall a grizzly while you shoot. Additionally, when the bear does turn in your direction, be prepared to dodge and get to higher ground.
Quests Involving Grizzly Bears
There are two missions that involve grizzlies. The first one rewards you with improved hunting bait, and the other rewards you with Cheeseburger the bear as a Fangs for Hire companion similar to Boomer the dog.
Clinical Study
This mission takes you to Henbane River (Faith’s territory) after completing the mission Doctor’s Orders (which first involves liberating the Mastodon Geothermal Park). Head to Hope County Jail (which will kickstart a story mission if you haven’t done that yet) and speak with Dr. Charles Lindsay. If the previous mission is completed, he will give you the Clinical Study mission.
The objective is to test a bait that Dr. Lindsay has developed that will attract angels, and his plan is to herd them away en masse. Pick up the prototype bait from the desk next to Dr. Lindsay and then head to the Pepper Residence, west of the jail.
The area is taken over by both cultists and angels—the enemies who have been influenced by Bliss—but your mission first is to only take out the cultists. Since you will need the angels later in the mission, make sure they aren’t harmed. All the cultists must be taken out (keep an eye out for a sniper on a hill behind the Pepper Residence) before the next objective will trigger.
Place the bait on a table near where the angels are working, then climb onto a nearby building to watch Dr. Lindsay’s test commence. Animals will be drawn to the bait, as well as the angels, which will attack the animals. More cultists will show up, and it’s your job to take out both cultists and angels.
Then, you will need to collect two skunk skins and three grizzly bear skins. Loot skunk skins from the area. Next, you will need a few undamaged grizzly skins. This is where those hunting locations come in handy. The closest areas are in the Whitetail Mountains, so head to one of those locations. Boomer is an asset here, as he can track and locate grizzlies easier in the dense woods.
Collect three undamaged grizzly bear skins, then head back to Dr. Lindsay at Hope County Jail. With the test completed and the skins collected, he will upgrade your bait. Now you can use it to attract angels as well as animals.
Right To Bear Arms
This next mission will reward you with Cheeseburger the bear as a companion. First, head to the F.A.N.G. Center in the Whitetail Mountains. If you haven’t liberated the area yet, eliminate all the cultists, then talk to Wade out front of the F.A.N.G. Center to kickstart the mission.
Wade will tell you that he set Cheeseburger free after the cultists tried to take him, and suggest that you look for him and make sure he’s alright. He will also tell you to collect some salmon and give it to Cheeseburger when you find him. This will make him friendly towards you.
First thing’s first, head to a salmon fishing spot. Follow the waypoint for the mission, which will lead you to a small dock. Once you have your salmon, head to Linero Building Supplies, located directly east of the salmon fishing spot.
Take out the cultists guarding the entrance of the building, then head to the water. Cheeseburger will be on the bank next to a pile of shipping containers. Interact with him and a cutscene will trigger, showing you feeding Cheeseburger the salmon you caught.
From there, more cultists will show up and try to take Cheeseburger. Take them out with Cheeseburger’s help. Once the cultists are dealt with, Cheeseburger will be added to your roster as a companion, and you now have an entire grizzly bear on your team.
