What is Storm Sickness in Fortnite?

A new season is underway in Fortnite, and with it come a new map, new items, and new mechanics. Previous seasons added useful features such as sliding, but Chapter 3: Season 3 has introduced something that will hinder players if they’re not careful. Storm Sickness is a new mechanic that makes the storm more dangerous than ever, and you need to know how to avoid it.

Fortnite’s storm forces you towards your enemies by shrinking the play area, and standing inside it will slowly damage you until death. Naturally, it’s something you want to avoid, but if you’re forced into a tough spot then the damage is low enough to manage for a short time. This has led experienced Fortnite players to use the storm as a weapon and spend a ridiculous amount of time inside it for an advantage, so Storm Sickness has been introduced to prevent this behaviour.

From now on, if you spend too much time in the storm, you’ll start to suffer from the new status condition, Storm Sickness, a simple status effect that causes you to take increased damage while standing in the storm. This prevents annoying strategies like players standing in the storm and continually healing to avoid death and generally makes the storm a much bigger threat than ever before.

If you get Storm Sickness, then you should have only one goal: exit the storm ASAP. The status effect will never go away once you’ve got it, but it won’t hurt you unless you’re in the storm, so you’ll need to remain entirely in the safe zone for the rest of the game. Like most status effects, the best way to deal with it is to avoid getting it in the first place, so steer clear of the storm from now on.
