Warner Bros ‘set to lose up to $100 million with blockbuster box office flop’ | Films | Entertainment

Warner Bros, who have merged with Discovery this year, has had some big changes at the top of the studio. Aside from cancelling the release of almost finished movies Batgirl and Scoob! Holiday Haunt for a tax write-off, there’s also been a shake-up at DC. James Gunn is now co-CEO of DC Studios, but before he took on the role, the comic book franchise had one more movie to put out that experts are saying is set to bomb big.

Dwayne Johnson’s critically panned Black Adam has made just $387 million globally in the seven weeks since the DC movie released. The Rock’s superhero movie, which co-stars Pierce Brosnan, cost $195 million to produce with $100 million on top to market globally, according to Variety’s sources.

Warner Bros insiders have since challenged this, claiming COVID box office limitations meant the studio had to scale this back to $80 million. Regardless, the blockbuster reportedly needs to make around $600 million before even having a chance to make a profit.

The outlet was told by box office experts that Black Adam will not cross $400 million globally, with around half of those sales going to cinemas owners.

So according to insiders, including rival executives, the film will lose between $50-100 million. Variety’s Warner Bros sources dispute this, claiming the movie will break even at $400 million.

However, even with premium video-on-demand sales on home release, that’s only going to bring in an extra $25-35 million to add to the global box office total.

The outlet did point out, however, that most movies do lose money at the box office and rely on the likes of rentals and product sales for profit.  Black Adam isn’t the only big movie struggling in a post-pandemic landscape, with Disney set to lose at least $100 million for their new animated movie Strange World.

Amid a cost of living crisis, perhaps some fans are simply waiting for such movies to arrive on their streaming platforms a few months after cinemas? Yet despite Black Adam’s underwhelming box office, The Rock is hopeful for a sequel; one that was teased to feature Henry Cavill’s Superman after he appeared in the first film’s end credits sequence.

After Black Adam’s release, Cavill said in a social media post: “I wanted to wait until the weekend was over before posting this because I wanted to give you all a chance to watch Black Adam. But now that plenty of you have, I wanted to make it official that I am back as Superman. The image you see on this post and what you saw in Black Adam is a very small taste of things to come. There’s a lot to be thankful for and I’ll get to that in time, but I wanted to thank you guys most of all, thank you for your support and thank you for your patience. I promise it will be rewarded.”

Perhaps now with Gunn in charge at DC Studios and Black Adam 2 co-starring Cavill, the sequel’s fortunes will turn around?
