Facebook has added a new Group Effects feature to Messenger that will let everyone in a video call enable AR effects. As part of the feature, over 70 new effects have been added to Messenger. These effects also include games like those that make you compete with the participants in the video calls to build the best burger.
The new feature has been added for both Messenger calls and Messenger Rooms and will also be launching on the Instagram platform. The Group Effect feature can be availed by tapping the smiley face icon in an ongoing group video call, which will open an effects tray for you to choose from.
The addition of new features for the group calls indicates that Facebook is not letting up in its competition with other platforms that offer AR games like Snapchat. And in spite of the fact that people are getting video call fatigue and are looking for options like podcasts, video calls are not going out of fashion anytime soon. The pandemic is still here and it might be a long time before a large section of the coronavirus-aware populace begins to feel that it doesn’t need to do a video call to friends and family anymore.
Facebook also plans to expand on the Group Effects feature by giving more creators and developers access to the new Spark AR Multipeer API. “With the Spark Multipeer API, all creators and developers can build dynamic, real-time interactive effects for larger audiences and transform the way people experience video calling.”, said Facebook in a blog post.
