Tron 3 With Jared Leto Is Happening – Report

The long-rumored third Tron movie is finally moving forward, according to The Hollywood Reporter. Jared Leto, who has long been associated with the project, is still attached to star.

The Hollywood Reporter is also indicating that the movie, titled Tron: Ares, comes from a script by Jesse Wigutow (The Prince, It Runs in the Family) and Joachim Rønning (Maleficent: Mistress of Evil, Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Men Tell No Tales) is in talks to direct.

Leto has championed a follow-up to 2010’s Tron: Legacy since as early as 2017, and in the years since, many names have come and gone around the project–in 2020, for example, Garth Davis (Mary Magdalene, Lion) was reportedly onboard to direct. According to reports at that time, Davis “aggressively pursued the job and his take won over Disney execs,” but at least for now there is no mention of his involvement.

Also in 2020, before Leto’s rep took a bit of a hit with the universally panned and unintentional cult classic Morbius (a film that quickly exited theaters, only to return months after its theatrical release on the strength of persisting memes), the actor made waves online posting an image of his intense workout getting ready for Tron 3.

The original Tron starred Jeff Bridges as a computer programmer who goes inside the software world of a mainframe computer where he interacts with programs in his attempt to escape. The movie was groundbreaking in its use of early CGI, and while it wasn’t a box office hit at the time, it has gained a devoted fan base over the years.
