According to a new report from the Hollywood Reporter, sources suggest that Amazon is developing a TV show based on the Tomb Raider franchise, with Phoebe Waller-Bridge writing the script and acting as executive producer for the project. Deadline also corroborated the report with the confirmation that a new Tomb Raider movie is in the works at Amazon.
Amazon previously confirmed in December 2022 that it would be creating a TV series based on PlayStation’s God of War franchise, which will reportedly be faithful to the original material. Afterwards, Amazon increased its investment into the gaming industry, with the retail giant publishing the next Tomb Raider game from Crystal Dynamics.
Now, hot on the heels of HBO’s The Last of Us TV series, Amazon has reportedly enlisted Phoebe Waller-Bridge as the executive producer and writer of the TV adaptation of Tomb Raider. Sources also said that the project is still in the early stages of development, so fans could be waiting a while for further details.
According to Hollywood Reporter, Waller-Bridge won’t be starring in a role despite being attached to the project as producer and writer. Details on the cast are currently thin, but sources told the media outlet that Ryan Andolina and Amanda Greenblatt will exec produce the series alongside Waller-Bridge. The Tomb Raider TV series will reportedly be the latest to stem from the three producers’ overall deal with Amazon. It looks like the streamer is eager to find its own blockbuster and compete against rivals like Netflix and HBO, which has hits like Arcane and The Last of Us.
The news comes as video game adaptations are on a hot streak, with Netflix’s Arcane and HBO’s The Last of Us both being recently renewed for second seasons. Sony, on the other hand, is adapting the Gran Turismo and Horizon franchises for the big screen. As for the Emmy winner actor and producer Phoebe Waller-Bridge, she is best known for creating the BBC sitcom Fleabag and the Killing Eve series.
Having received three Emmy Awards, two Golden Globe Awards, and the British Academy Television Award for Best Female Comedy Performance with her role in Fleabag, Waller-Bridge also contributed to the screenplay of No Time To Die.
We already know that Amazon does not hesitate to chase after potential blockbuster projects. In addition to making a God of War TV series, Amazon spent a billion US dollars on The Lord of the Rings: Rings of Power, which received a mixed reception upon its launch. But, despite the mixed reception, another video game adaptation is now seemingly in the works at Amazon.
