Landing the right answer took some time. The first solid hint I got was when I tried ‘JELLY’, which gave me two correct letters. Next, I went for ‘JERK’, a pretty close guess. Finally, I put ‘JERKY’ and arrived at the right answer.

Today’s Wordle etymology

The etymology of today’s word is tied to the word ‘JERK’. There are records stating that in the late 16th century ‘JERK’ was a term used to refer to the act of pulling something with sudden energy.

Now, ‘JERKY’ as a word to reference preserved meat comes from a little bit later, in the 18th century. It comes from the American Spanish word ‘charqui’ that indicated the method of air-drying a piece of meat.

The challenge comes in how your guesses count for all of the words, so you need to decide whether you’re going to focus on a specific word or try to solve multiple words at the same time. Thankfully, the number of guesses you’re given increases alongside the amount of words you’re expected to solve.
