CD Projekt Red’s Q3 2022 financial reports reveal that The Witcher Remake will be an open-world title. The statement on the official reports reads that “The Witcher Remake is a story-driven, single-player open-world RPG,” that will reimagine the first title in the trilogy, which originally launched 15 years ago as a far more linear experience than its sequels.
CDPR rolled up its sleeves in October and announced that a multitude of projects are in the works, including The Witcher Remake, whose development process was handed to Fool’s Theory, another Poland-based studio that will work on the game under the company’s full creative supervision. The details regarding the development process of the remake have been scarce, as the developer only revealed that it would be developed in Unreal Engine 5. That being said, the evidence found in the recent financial reports describes the forthcoming remake as a story-driven single-player RPG featuring an open world, which was an element that the first Witcher game could not offer due to the technological limitations of its time.
The Polish studio is no stranger to telling stories that take place in The Witcher universe, as the team consists of a great number of developers who have previously served in other titles in the franchise according to the original announcement. It’s worth noting that the studio has seven years of experience under its belt as it has offered its outsource development services to various titles including Outriders, Baldur’s Gate III, and Hellblade: Senua’s Sacrifice in the past.
While the recent news is quite exciting for The Witcher fans, there is still no word on the remake’s release window. That’s only natural though, as the Polish game giant has been supervising or working on a myriad of new projects alongside The Witcher Remake. The production line includes the highly anticipated Cyberpunk 2077 expansion Phantom Liberty, which will arrive in 2023. After the expansion’s debut, CDPR’s teams, including the one at the newly-established Boston studio, will start working on the Cyberpunk 2077 sequel. And of course, the new The Witcher trilogy is also on its way to building on the success of the previous titles, with Sebastian Kalemba directing The Witcher 4.
