The Voice of Cards series, an experimental JRPG trilogy from legendary developers Square Enix, launches onto mobile at long last

At the tail end of 2021, Square Enix released a quiet little indie card-based RPG titled The Voice of Cards: The Isle Dragon Roars. Shortly after, they followed up the original release with a couple of sequels in the form of The Forsaken Maiden and The Beasts of Burden. Now, after being previously only available to console and PC users, this trilogy has been released onto mobile devices!

The Voice of Cards series is a weird assortment of games, and lands somewhere between a board game and a card game at the same time. The overworld map is laid out in a tile-based format, with the world slowly being revealed piece by piece to you as you travel throughout it. As you land on each tile, different encounters will pop up, either story-related or fully random. Even the villages you adventure through are laid out in this format too!

Combat-wise, Voice of Cards plays out as a card game would. You play certain cards that do certain things, be that healing, items, or gear effects and damage. This part’s fairly typical, but it’s got some interesting ideas that mix up the formula a tiny bit. Overall, the combat is darn good given it’s the legendary JRPG developer Square Enix themselves making it.

As for the plot, it’s got some light twists and turns but for the most part, it seeks to emulate a classic high fantasy adventure, complete with the big bad evil trying to destroy the world and a party full of engaging characters who will reveal more and more about themselves as you continue throughout the game.

All that being said, The Voice of Cards series is a low commitment but really unique and cool JRPG that is worth your time. If you’re interested, you can check out the first game for only $11.99 at the link below! The rest of the games from then on are also priced at the same for each entry, so check those out too if you enjoy your time with Isle Dragon Roars!
