The Unbeatable & Unbelievable versus the Devil

Have you ever wondered, “What If… Squirrel Girl beat up Mephisto?” Well, you can stop wondering that now, because it already happened, back in The Unbelievable Gwenpool (2016) #25 by Christopher Hastings, Gurihiru, and Clayton Cowles.

Unbeatable & Unbelievable vs. The Devil

In The Unbelievable Gwenpool #25, the final issue of the series, Gwen finds herself face-to-face with a future version of herself. The future Gwen gives 2018 Gwen a chance to glimpse a handful of scenes from her future.

Included among these is a sequence in which Squirrel Girl and Gwen are hanging out, and Doreen is utilizing her computer science acumen in order to examine one of Gwen’s supporting cast members, Vincent Doonan the Doombot. That’s when Cecil arrives and informs Gwen and Squirrel Girl that he’s located Gwen’s missing brother: he’s in Hell!

Soon Doreen and Gwen are at Mephisto’s doorstep, but the Devil is no match for the combined powers of the two heroes:

While it was a hypothetical scene when it appeared in The Unbelievable Gwenpool, a subsequent issue of The Unbeatable Squirrel Girl enshrined the event in canon. In The Unbeatable Squirrel Girl (2015b) #37 by Ryan North, Derek CharmRico RenziTravis Lanham, and Erica Henderson, Squirrel Girl has fallen in battle, and the issue opens with many of her super powered allies attending her own funeral.

Obviously, Doreen is alive (spoiler: Skrulls), and she and Nancy end up watching the funeral Tom Sawyer-style. However, one of the heroes who eulogizes Squirrel Girl is none other than Gwenpool… and she mentions the fact that the duo “traveled to the Underworld together and beat up Mephisto.”

Mephisto Better Watch Out

The complete runs of both The Unbeatable Squirrel Girl and The Unbelievable Gwenpool are available to read now, either on Marvel Unlimited, or possibly at your local comic shop and/or public library.

Will this be the only instance of Squirrel Girl facing off against Mephisto, or does the Devil have another beating in his future? The Beat wants to hear from you! Give us a shout-out, here in the comment section or over on social media @comicsbeat.
