The Super Mario Bros. Movie opens in April, and it’s expected to put up big-time numbers at the box office. According to Deadline, the animated film could pull in between $85 million-$90 million in the US from its Wednesday-Sunday launch over the Easter weekend.

Deadline noted that this figure is “on the conservative side,” so actual results may be stronger. Box office predictions are never perfect, in any event, but a big result for The Super Mario Bros. film is expected given the star power of the movie and the size of the Mario franchise.

The site said it wouldn’t be out of the realm of possibility for The Super Mario Bros. Movie to make more than $100 million right out of the gate in the US. Early tracking data suggests the movie will perform well with boys and girls under 12, families, and gamers under 25, Deadline reported.

The best opening weekend for a movie in the US over Easter weekend was 2016’s Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice, which made more than $166 million over its first three days. That’s not a perfect, complete, or fair comparison for a variety of reasons, especially because it covers a three-day period while estimates for The Super Mario Bros. movie are for a five-day period.

After getting delayed from Holiday 2022, The Super Mario Bros. Movie was set for a Friday release on April 7 before it got moved up to Wednesday, April 5.

1993’s Super Mario Bros. movie starring Bob Hoskins and John Leguizamo made only $21 million over its lifetime. The new animated movie is expected to surpass that after one day.

Chris Pratt voices Mario in the upcoming The Super Mario Bros. Movie, with Jack Black voicing Bowser, Charlie Day portraying Luigi, Seth Rogen bringing DK to life, and Anya Taylor-Joy voicing Peach.
