The anime follows the almost unkillable shinobi Gabimaru on his quest to earn his freedom so that he can return to his wife and get revenge on the clan leader who betrayed him. All he has to do is explore a mysterious island filled with all manner of unknown danger, bring back the fabled Elixir of Life, and live to tell the tale. To make things more complicated, Gabimaru has to compete against several other death-row convicts and their guardians, while sinister forces observe them.

If you’re looking to read the original manga this anime was adapted from, those are also available in paperback form. Illustrated by Yuji Kaku, the manga has fantastic art and incredible action sequences. All 13 volumes have been translated into English, and these are priced at around $10-$15 each.
