The first Silent Hill was originally released on Playstation in 1999. The original game had players controlling Henry Manson as he searched for his adoptive daughter after being involved in a car crash outside the town of Silent Hill. The game was critically acclaimed upon release, going to sell over two million copies and falling under Playstation’s Greatest Hits category. The game has been named among many of the greatest horror games of all time, and the series itself is still held in high regard among horror fans, despite its troubled history.

The original game was quickly followed up with a sequel, Silent Hill 2, which was released in 2001 on Playstation 2, Xbox, and eventually on PC, with the game selling over one million copies in the first month of its release in North America. The sequel had players controlling James Sunderland as he searched for his deceased wife in the town of Silent Hill. Just like the first game, Silent Hill 2 is still widely considered to be one of the greatest horror games of all time.

Sadly, it wasn’t always smooth sailing for the series. It has been some time since fans of the series have received a new entry in the classic survival horror series. Fans were left disappointed after the much-hyped P.T demo, which went on to become the project Silent Hills, was canceled in 2015. This disappointing cancelation meant the series would not get a new release during the PS4/Xbox One generation of consoles.

The last game the series received was Silent Hill Downpour, which was released in March 2012 on Xbox 360 and Playstation 3. Downpour was a third-person over-the-shoulder semi-open world game that saw players take on the role of Murphy Pendleton, an escaped convict who fled to the town of Silent Hill after a car crash. While, critics praised the story; they were less favorable about most other aspects of the game, resulting in poor reviews.
