Today’s Fantastic Four #14 has an answer as to why the Marvel Universe didn’t have to suffer the effects of a coronavirus pandemic.

Article Summary

  • Marvel’s Fantastic Four #14 reveals how COVID-19 was thwarted in their universe.
  • Billionaire Dan Passi, using his Metamind app, secretly manipulates society’s actions.
  • The story compares the influence of individuals in Marvel to psychohistory concepts.
  • Despite ethical concerns, the Fantastic Four are determined to take down Passi.

The Marvel Comics Universe was sold as “the world outside your window”. It isn’t, of course, but it has real American cities rather than DC’s fake ones and… that’s about it. But while it had 9/11, and Brexit, it didn’t have the coronavirus pandemic that the real world suffered. The “Avengers: Everyday Heroes” was a non-canon special. But why? Well, today’s Fantastic Four #14 has an answer. As the Fantastic Four encounter people using the Metamind app on their phones.

People encouraged to do small actions, in return for virtual rewards, all building up to something bigger. And courtesy of billionaire Dan Passi.

Which inspires a drive-vy – or fly-by – to this very rich individual.

It’s been unfashionable of late for supervillains to reveal their entire plan to the superheroes, but clearly, Dan Passi likes the classics and believes he is untouchable. We know someone like that, don’t we children?

One of the issues with psychohistory is that it has to ignore the exceptional individual, and in the Foundation books, it gets knocked off course via the existence of one mutant. The Marvel Comics Universe has a million of them, as well as all manner of superpowered individuals. I am not entirely sure it could cope.

But that’s clearly not stopping Dan Passi, he has an AI which can… compensate for such factors, maybe? Anyway, it’s making his fortune, and putting a lot of power in his hands…

But why confess to this all? Well, he believes that he is untouchable.

Protected by a law that, if neccessary, he could probably rewrite using just these methods.

Dan Passi stopped Covid in the Marvel Universe, everyone. Does the Fantastic Four really want to take him down? Yes, yes, they do…
