Surviving in The Callisto Protocol depends on what equipment and items you must fight with. Other horror games focus on keeping the monsters away, while Callisto Protocol focuses on its brutal melee combat. Putting you face to face against these powerful and terrifying monsters will make your and Jacob’s heart pound.
While each battle can be an intricate dance between you and your opponent, being well-equipped can make many encounters trivial. Collecting Callisto Credits will help you upgrade your gear. Other loot may include Health Gel, which immediately heals Jacob, items to be sold, or bullets. Bullets dropped will only apply to weapons you have; if you miss finding a weapon’s schematics or still need to build it, you won’t find its ammo from randomized drops. Collecting or buying bullets will ensure you’re always prepared for a critical hit or can dispatch enemies from a distance.
Stomp Some Stuff
While it has little combat use, Jacob can stomp dead enemies or loot boxes scattered along the floor. The cramped hallways of Black Iron Prison will be full of long-dead bodies, but take note of the ones you recently took out yourself. Bodies from enemies you killed can then be stomped on and will drop different items for Jacob to collect. After stomping, small items will fall on the floor near the body and can be picked up immediately after stomping. While other bodies can be stomped, bodies of non-enemies will not drop any loot.
While exploring, you will also come across boxes that can be stomped on and destroyed for loot. These boxes will have a bit more color on them than the rest of the environment and will be marked with faint blue lights. These boxes can sometimes be out in the open or tucked around corners. Be sure to thoroughly check the floor of each room for these boxes before moving on.
Always Check High And Low
Many rooms will be full of lockers, chests, and glass cases for you to find loot in. The larger chests have much better loot than the smaller loot boxes, and will have Jacob wrench them open with his shiv. These larger chests tend to be more noticeable, but it’s always worthwhile to check optional pathways to find more.
Glass display cases will have loot visible but won’t have an icon on your HUD until the glass is broken. Break the glass of display cases with a simple melee attack to have your HUD mark what is inside. As you begin to recognize loot without the HUD, these display cases can be checked simply by looking in and deciding if the glass needs to be broken. Lockers can also be opened and will often have loot sitting within. Lockers also tend to be in rooms in groups, so if you find one be sure to check the other walls of the room for more.
Looking just above eye level will have you sometimes find weak air vents that can be destroyed with the GRP. Behind these vents are boxes that can be pulled down using the GRP to have Jacob stomp on them. You will occasionally find loot boxes out of reach, requiring a small charge from your GRP. When opening a larger chest or lockers, be prepared for a possible shoulder-hugging jump scare. Smaller zombie-type creatures are often found hiding in these locations, waiting to ambush you. They will rarely pose any actual threat and can be killed in a short quick time event as long as you have enough health, and they don’t finish you off. No matter how many loot opportunities end out in an alien, it’s best not to be discouraged and loot on, as the rewards will always out-way the small attacks.
When In Doubt, Buy It
Some encounters will need bullets to fight through, or sometimes you may be low on health and need the additional boost to make it out of a tough spot. Consumables can be crafted in the 3-D print stations within the upgrade wheel. These purchases cost a lot and would take credits away from your upgrades, but sometimes necessary calls.
Both weapon upgrades and item purchases require CalIisto Credits. If you need more items, it’s best to backtrack and be more thorough with your search to save your credits on invaluable upgrades for your weapons. Items can also be sold for credits at these machines, and with limited inventory space, it may occasionally make sense to sell one item to make another more-needed one. Loot is limited in this short and linear game, and everything should be used accordingly.
