The biggest gaming news of the week: May 20, 2022

0

Once again, it’s time to look back upon a week’s worth of games industry news and despair. Or get ridiculously excited, depending on what went down! But seriously, how do we feel about Netflix maybe getting into live streaming?

Unlike our first roundup, this week was all about teases and announcing upcoming events! Be it Overwatch 2, Final Fantasy 7, or Dead By Daylight — publishers are reminding us that E3 season is upon us. Well, in spirit anyway, since the show got canceled. Either way, most studios are staying quiet until Summer Games Fest rolls around. Hype cycles and all that jazz.

Luckily, there’s still plenty to mull over. Let’s take a look at the biggest stories from the past week already.

Dead by Daylight gets a dating sim spinoff

Hooked on You is the official Dead By Daylight dating sim. No, really! Smooching monstrous killers is what this one is all about. Random though it may sound, fans wanted something like this for ages. Behaviour Interactive is teaming up with Psyop for this, the studio that brought us I Love You, Colonel Sanders! A Finger Lickin’ Good Dating Simulator. Please, look that game up in your spare time.

Norman Reedus (accidentally) leaks Death Stranding 2

Celebrities are rarely aware of the games industry’s often-absurd adherence to secrecy. For example, Norman Reedus casually stated that Dead Stranding 2 is happening! I’m betting that this was supposed to get an announcement at Summer Games Fest, and Geoff Keighley is quietly seething right now.

System of a Down’s Serj Tankian wrote a song for Metal Hellsinger

Some people know Serj Tankian is one of the best vocalists of our time, and others are just wrong. Good thing he’s writing original music for Metal Hellsinger, the Doom-meets-Guitar Hero rhythm game. So many hours of my youth were spent blasting System of a Down while playing Halo 3 online, so this is a dream come true for millennials worldwide.

The Last of Us remake might come out this fall

The Last of Us is probably getting a remake. It’s still weird thinking about that, as most people think of the first game as contemporary. Apparently, it could launch this fall too. It makes some sense though, as there are no PlayStation exclusives aside from God of War Ragnarok coming out during the holiday season.

Genshin Impact 2.7 will finally launch

Nothing demonstrates how massive Genshin Impact is like the recent hubbub surrounding update 2.7. Well, maybe making $2 billion every six months is a better measuring stick, but still! Fans were going absolutely unhinged after 2.7’s many delays, but it’s finally coming out.

Witcher 3 is finally coming out on new-gen consoles

CD Projekt Red has delayed the PS5 and Xbox Series X|S ports of The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt on a couple of occasions. Once last year, and more recently in April. Thankfully, the studio is kicking the seven-year-old RPG out for everyone to enjoy some time this fall. Don’t act like you probably won’t buy this for the third or fourth time either.

Marvel Snap brings superheroes to digital CCGs

Card battlers are all the rage these days. So naturally, Disney is throwing its most popular IP into the fray with Marvel Snap. GLHF spoke with director Ben Brode, who previously brought us Hearthstone, about how the team at Second Dinner is planning to reinvigorate the CCG scene.

Silent Hill comes in threes

Nobody could stop talking about all the Silent Hill games allegedly in development. Mainly the rumors about a Silent Hill 2 remake from Bloober Team, and boy, are most folks not looking forward to that. It’s me — I’m ‘most folks.’ None of this is official, of course, but it’s looking pretty likely as time goes on.
