The biggest gaming news of the week: June 3, 2022

0

The E3 season is in full bloom. Well, it would be if the show was still around, anyway. It doesn’t matter, though — publishers worldwide are still dropping announcements like an early spring hailstorm.

Unlike the past few weeks, today’s news roundup is full of massive game reveals. No joke, between PlayStation’s recent State of Play showcase and the upcoming Sumer Game Fest, it’s like Christmas for nerds. You know things are good as gravy when Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2 details don’t make our list.

Enough small talk from me, though. Let’s jump right into the biggest news stories of the past week.

Sonic Frontiers looks great, sometimes

Not sure I’ve seen fans turn on a game as quickly as they have with Sonic Frontiers. Throughout the week, Sega released several gameplay clips. There was an excellent initial teaser, so-so demo footage, and combat gameplay that was pretty rough. I wrote all three of those news posts, and my impressions slowly worsened over time, like pretty much everyone else.

Bloodborne fans fall for obvious remaster troll

Ok, it’s been almost a week since this one happened, and I am still angry. Not because the dastardly fellow that tricked everyone into believing Bloodborne Remastered was real didn’t earn their 15 minutes of fame, but because I (and many others) fell for it. Everyone loves a good bamboozle, but this was just cruel. Apparently, Sony will even put Marvel’s Spider-Man on PC but not Bloodborne, I guess. The hunter’s dream is dead.

First Pokémon Scarlet & Violet trailer is charming, and chonky

There’s no overstating how incomparably popular Pokémon is. As if the fervor over Scarlet & Violet‘s new trailer and release date details doesn’t prove that for you, people are going wild over Lechonk. Yes, they called a pig-looking Pokémon ‘Lechonk’ as if the memes don’t write themselves.

Madden comes to Madden

The late John Madden is Madden NFL 23‘s cover star. Writing that story without saying ‘Madden’ too much nearly broke my brain. For real. At least it’s a loving tribute to the legendary coach, and the gameplay trailer was pretty sick.

The Resident Evil 4 remake is real

It’s official: Capcom is remaking Resident Evil 4. Uttering that aloud is damn near surreal for long-time fans like me. The team behind the immaculate Resident Evil 2 remake is handling this one, and it’ll be more horror-centric than the original. That’s probably the direction if the creepy announcement trailer is any indication.

Street Fighter 6 gameplay is wonderfully brutal

We finally saw Street Fighter 6 in motion, and it’s looking like everything fans have been asking for and more. The fights are brutal yet stylish, showing Capcom is going all-in on retaining its best-fighting-series throne, at least from a competitive legacy standpoint. Shame that the whole roster leaked online, though.

Final Fantasy 16 gets another trailer, finally

Oh boy, that’s it. Shut down all other gaming news for the month. Nothing will be more exciting than Final Fantasy 16‘s gameplay reveal. It may not have turn-based combat, but everything about this is overflowing with what makes the series great. Epic storylines, immaculate art direction, and music that people will still fawn over for years to come — Square Enix, I need this game tomorrow.
