The biggest gaming news of the week: June 10, 2022

0

Week one of not-E3 is over, reminding everyone that video game hype cycles are tiring. For instance, ask any God of War diehard how they feel these days. The rumor mill grinds away at us all.

Thankfully, there’s plenty of cool stuff happening. The Goldeneye remaster is all but certain, another Silent Hill movie could be happening, and Halo Infinite is getting official co-op support. That last one is almost seven months too late, but hey, soon you can sticky-grenade friends by mistake!

There were also several more minor announcements worth noting. A fan-favorite character returns in Street Fighter 6, and Marvel’s Midnight Suns has a release date. So do Deliver Us Mars and TMNT: Shredder’s Revenge.

No more honorable mentions, though. Let’s get into this week’s biggest stories.

Another Xbox might come out soon

Before you panic: no, Microsoft isn’t releasing an Xbox Series X|S successor already. This new device codenamed ‘Keystone’ will be a game-streaming box sort that utilizes xCloud and Xbox Game Pass Ultimate. Similar to an Amazon Fire Stick or Apple TV, only for video games.

The Last of Us remake is real

After months of rumors, The Last of Us Part 1 for PS5 was revealed. It’s a top-to-bottom remake of the original game, with modern bells and whistles like better texture work and 4K resolutions. Many fans aren’t too keen on this, but others are gun-ho. Regardless, it’s coming out on Sept. 2, 2022.

GameStop employees walk off the job

Several GameStop employees at a store in Lincoln, Nebraska, walked away with little warning. Former staff cited an abusive district manager, impossible sales quotas, and high turnover rates. It’s the second GameStop in Lincoln where this happened too.

Overdose might be Hideo Kojima’s horror game

The legendary director behind Metal Gear Solid and Death Standing might be developing a horror game called Overdose. There’s no telling if this is legit, but industry insider Tom Henderson claims to have seen a trailer. Kojima Productions allegedly asked for the original story on Try Hard Guides to be taken down even. Take that for what you will.

Modern Warfare 2 gameplay is sneaky

At long last, we got campaign footage from Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2. It’s looking solid, if not somewhat safe. Task Force 141 infiltrates an oil rig at night and slowly removes all guards. You know how this goes. No multiplayer reveal yet, but that should arrive somewhat soon(ish).

Diablo Immortal faces backlash

Whew, everyone is mad about Diablo Immortal. Not the game itself, but the monetization systems that gouge players like there’s no tomorrow. Long-time fans of the series aren’t happy. Blizzard is already tweaking how some microtransactions function, but the core issue of making Diablo’s primary appeal (getting loot) easier through real-money purchases is still there.

That’s it for this week’s round-up. See you next Friday, folks!
