The biggest gaming news of the week: August 5, 2022

We keep speeding through 2022 like time doesn’t exist. Seriously, can you believe there are less than five months left until Christmas? Scary thought, that. Let’s forget about it and focus on video games before I spontaneously combust from stress.

The games industry was a smidge less silly than last week. There were interesting announcements from PlayStation, Riot, and Dead By Daylight developer Behaviour Interactive. However, none of those stood up to the hype that was Pokémon Presents. It’s too bad Scarlet and Violet‘s legendaries are kind of ‘blah’ overall.

As a reminder, there’s been a fine selection of freebies over the past few days courtesy of Epic, Xbox, and Ubisoft. Some of these are limited-time deals, so don’t wait much longer!

Now that we’ve gotten through the fluff, it’s time to reflect on this week’s biggest stories.

The Russo brothers love The Last of Us Part 2

The Russo brothers, best known for directing Avengers: Infinity War and Avengers: Endgame, believe The Last of Us Part 2 is an all-timer. It’s pretty high praise, especially for such a divisive title. They even claimed aspects of it were very Spielberg-like, mainly how Naughty Dog handles framing in some scenes. While many might not agree with that notion, it’s still fun to see Hollywood folks analyze video games like this.

Dragons are turning into the state of Ohio in Skyrim

We all love silly community-made tweaks, right? Maybe the Buckeye state doesn’t — since someone turned every dragon in Skyrim into Ohio. As in the literal geographic land mass that’s now capable of flight and breathing fire! We’ll never know how someone came up with this, but that’s probably for the best.

Pokémon fans eat-up Fidough

So of all the loveable new Pokémon coming in Scarlet and Violet, none have captured hearts like Fidough — a puppy made entirely of uncooked dough. Fans love this pure bread dog. Yes, I’m using that joke for a second time! In all seriousness, there probably hasn’t been a Pokémon reveal that has generated this much enthusiasm in ages. Maybe it’s just because everyone loves sweets, dogs, and carbs.

LA Rams kicker Cameron Dicker leaks Modern Warfare 2

Well, this was an oopsie. It seems that Infinity Ward is allowing the Los Angeles Rams to try Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2 early, and kicker Cameron Dicker decided to share pictures of the lobby system, weapons, modes, and more on Instagram. All of these were deleted pretty fast, but not before people caught them. It was an honest mistake, no doubt!

Halo streamer wins $20,000

Several weeks ago, Charlie ‘Cr1tikal’ White put up a bounty. The goal was to get someone to finish a Legendary All Skulls On (LASO) playthrough of Halo 2 Anniversary without any game-overs. It’s something nobody has done in the 18 years since Halo 2 came out, until now. Speedrunner Jervalin managed to do it and now has an extra $20,000 in the bank. What a legend.

Tencent further invests in Ubisoft

Tencent Holdings allegedly wants to become Ubisoft’s most significant shareholder. Considerably more than the 5 percent stake it already has. Allegedly, Tencent is offering 100 euros ($102.47 USD) per share, which is almost twice as much as its current 66 euros per share. There’s no certainty that all of this is happening, but it’ll be an interesting development should this pan out.

That’s it for this week. Until next time, folks!
