Matt Reeves’ the Batman is getting a spinoff series, focusing on the villain Penguin. According to The Hollywood Reporter, the Penguin spinoff series is in early development for HBO Max.
Colin Farrell, who plays Oswald Cobblepot aka Penguin in the Batman, has been approached to reprise his role in the series. However, Farrell’s involvement isn’t confirmed yet. Reeves and the Batman producer Dylan Clark will be executive producers on the spinoff series. Lauren LeFranc will be writing the script for the Penguin spinoff series. It is expected to focus on Cobblepot’s rise in the Gotham City underworld. Warner Bros. hasn’t confirmed any details about the Penguin spinoff series yet, so this information should be taken with a grain of salt.
Penguin series isn’t the only spinoff from the Batman. Warner Bros. is also working on a prequel series that follows members of the Gotham City Police Department. The series will take place before the events of the Batman and explore “how Gotham became corrupt and infested with criminals.” The series will be produced by Reeves and Terence Winter. Winter will also serve as a writer on the Gotham PD series. Details regarding the cast and release date of the Gotham PD series aren’t revealed yet.
Along with these, many other DC shows will be coming to HBO Max including J.J. Abrams’ Justice League Dark project, Greg Berlanti’s Green Lantern series, The Suicide Squad spinoff series Peacemaker, DMZ limited series, and more. More details about upcoming DC shows will be announced during DC FanDome event.
