The 5 best announcements from Summer Game Fest 2022

0

Geoff’s Keighley’s E3 replacement, Summer Game Fest, took place last night and we saw brand new trailers for a bunch of video games you can get excited about both this year and next year. Street Fighter 6, Cuphead, and Call of Duty were all present, and those aren’t even the games that we’re highlighting today.

Here is our list of the best announcements made during Summer Game Fest 2022. Make sure to add these releases to your calendar.

The Last of Us Remake launching in September

A leak that happened mere hours before the show meant that one of Geoff’s biggest surprises for the event was spoiled, but it’s still worth mentioning. The Last of Us is getting a full remake which will launch on PS5 exclusively, with a PC version coming later down the line. This will take full advantage of the PS5’s hardware, in addition to bringing all animations and mechanics up to par with The Last of Us Part II’s complicated physics and movement systems.

This announcement comes along with confirmation of The Last of Us‘ standalone multiplayer game. This is apparently as big as other Naughty Dog games, with its own story to experience, with a brand new cast of characters. We’ve only seen concept art as of now, but it’s very exciting to see more.

Routine is back

Routine was announced back in 2012, so it’s understandable if it’s slipped your mind since. What we thought for a moment might be a sequel to Alien Isolation turned out to be a return to abandoned space stations, retro-futurist tech, and hostile robots. Yes, those are all in Alien Isolation, and we’re looking at a fairly similar concept here, but this looks like the return to that oppressive sci-fi atmosphere that we’ve all been waiting for.

Marvel’s Midnight Suns showcases Spider-Man, launches October

We were treated to a very flashy trailer for Marvel’s Midnight Suns, the XCOM-style take on the Marvel universe. The new trailer showcased Spider-Man for the first time, who is always a fan favorite, and we finally have a release date. We can expect to start playing Midnight Suns on October 7.

Goat Simulator 3 parodies Dead Island yet again

Goat Simulator once again parodied an iconic Dead Island trailer, and announced Goat Simulator 3. Goat Simulator 2 never happened, but that’s not really important. You can expect Goat Simulator 3 to be more goat-focused chaos, with all the flames and destruction that only a goat with a particularly sticky tongue can create.

The Callisto Protocol looks like the Dead Space revival we all wanted

The Callisto Protocol was already shown off briefly, but this extended gameplay trailer that premiered at Summer Game Fest was the best look at the game we’ve had yet. It looks visceral, brutal, and bloody, but tinged with a thick horror atmosphere to keep you on your toes. This is being worked on by some of the people that worked on Dead Space, and looks set to be the revival that fans have been begging for.
