The first part of the highly anticipated The Long Dark expansion, Tales from the Far Territory, will launch on December 5 on PC, a recent trailer has revealed. The paid expansion will introduce new items, gameplay mechanics, and story-driven tales set in the Far Territory.
The expansion has been in the works since October at Hinterland Games. The Canada-based developer will be releasing the long-awaited DLC in multiple parts over the course of 12 months. With the first part making its debut in December, the expansion will bring a wide variety of new places to explore alongside three new stories, gameplay features, and items that “significantly add to the world of Great Bear Island and the game’s core survival foundation.”
The trailer teases a great number of regions in the upcoming expansion, including “forgotten railways, abandoned airfields, and mysterious mines”. Based on what we see in the trailer, it is safe to say that the Far Territory has a lot in its arsenal to further enhance the sense of isolation, which is the core element of The Long Dark. The developer also shared an official roadmap for the 12-month series expansion. The roadmap elaborates on the upcoming content and states that it will arrive in multiple drops over an eight-to-ten-week schedule.
Tales from the Far Territory will take players to Far Range Branch Line, which serves as a hub region for other places such as the industrial mine, forsaken airfield, and mountain pass. The content in the upcoming expansion will also come with various gameplay mechanics such as Insomnia Affliction and Glimmer Fog, which will force players to find new ways of survival in the Far Territory. The former is a rather strange condition that can trigger after “exposure to certain influences.” And the latter is a strange phenomenon that is only seen in this region and “charges the air and ground with electrostatic energy,” resulting in technical issues in electronic devices.
Alongside new gameplay features, the paid expansion will introduce new items such as the handheld shortwave and travois to offer a more compelling survival experience. It is worth noting that the expansion comes with three new narrative-driven stories as well. The new Tales will take players on a perilous journey that reveals the strange past of the region, which will “build up the story of Great Bear Island,” ultimately complementing the Wintermute storyline.
The first part of the anticipated Tales from the Far Territory expansion is slated to launch on Steam and Epic Games in December, starting a whole new journey in The Long Dark on PC. The expansion is also set to arrive on PlayStation 4, PlayStation 5, Xbox One, Xbox Series X|S, and Nintendo Switch in 2023, though there is no word on the definitive release date.
