Star Wars Jedi: Survivor is set to release soon, but even sooner than that comes Star Wars Jedi: Battle Scars, a novel that tells a story of a quest Cal Kestis and friends partook sometime before the events of the game; IGN just released a free section of the book, which you can read right here.
Star Wars Jedi: Survivor takes place five years after its predecessor, Fallen Order. Five years is a long time, in which a lot can happen, so it only makes sense that Cal found himself in some sort of conflict. Though it’s yet unclear exactly when in the timeline this book will take place, its cover confirms that it’s “years” before Survivor, so it’s likely closer to Fallen Order.
The book’s central premise is that an Imperial Stormtrooper is looking to defect, but they need the help of the Stinger Mantis crew. In exchange, they offer information, specifically details of a “powerful, potentially invaluable tool for their fight against the Empire.” The ex-Stormtrooper can help them get to it, but it will predictably lead the crew into some trouble, particularly with one of the Sith Inquisitors, the Fifth Brother.
The preview provided by IGN focuses on Merrin. To be more specific, it’s from Merrin’s point of view, confirming that this will be a multiple-POV novel, letting fans explore the minds of Cal, undoubtedly, and likely Cere and Greez as well. Merrin runs into the treacherous Stormtrooper for the first time in the preview, and she isn’t shy in using her powers for intimidation.
It will be interesting to see what kind of tone this book’s story will try to capture. Cal’s actor, Cameron Monaghan, has gone on record stating that Star Wars Jedi: Survivor’s story will be “deeper and darker” than the first game, and that could push Cal “to the point where he might break.” Monaghan suggests that this new story will put a strain on Cal’s relationships, as different people will have different opinions on how to deal with certain new circumstances.
Star Wars Jedi: Battle Scars will become available on March 7.
