Superman: Legacy Is Not Delayed, Director James Gunn Confirms

Have no fear, Superman: Legacy isn’t getting delayed because of the Hollywood writers and actors strikes the past few months. Director James Gunn has confirmed the DC superhero film is still planned to premiere July 11, 2025.

The Guardians of the Galaxy filmmaker who now oversees DC Studios reiterated Superman: Legacy’s release date on X (formerly Twitter). “Thanks to the efforts of our talented crew, who never lost faith during the longest strikes in Hollywood history, and who never let their foot off the pedal, continuing to barrel forward, creating the most amazing character and set designs I’ve seen in my entire career, [Superman: Legacy] will be making the originally planned release date of July 11, 2025,” wrote Gunn.

A lot of other studios have shifted their release dates for their superhero movies. For instance, Marvel Studios just announced that Deadpool 3 and Captain America: Brave New World are being pushed back to July 26, 2024, and February 14, 2025, respectively. In fact, Marvel Studios will only have one movie premiering in theaters for the entirety of next year.

In June, Gunn found his Man of Steel for Superman: Legacy with The Politician actor David Corenswet. In addition, The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel star Rachel Brosnahan will portray Lois Lane. (Euphoria’s Jacob Elrodi just revealed he turned down an audition for the film.) A couple of months later, in August, Gunn then debunked a rumor he was making a young Superman movie.

Superman: Legacy was announced in January and will help kick off a new DC slate overseen by Gunn and his DC Studios co-head Peter Safran. It will be a part of Chapter 1: Gods & Monsters, which will also include Supergirl: Woman of Tomorrow and The Brave and the Bold.
