Super Mario Bros Movie Nintendo Direct Announced For Early March

We’re only about a month away from its premiere!

Via a recent Twitter post, Nintendo has confirmed that a Nintendo Direct is set to take place on March 9, though it will explicitly have no information about upcoming games and will instead focus on the fast-approaching Super Mario Bros. Movie. The Direct will feature the movie’s final trailer, and it’s set to premiere at 2PM PT/ 5PM ET.

The timing of this trailer seems to be quite deliberate. Although the Direct will occur on March 9 for the western world, it will take place early morning the next day for Japan, March 10, which Nintendo, as well as gamers around the world, have been affectionately referring to as “Mario Day” throughout the years, due to how the date looks when shortened (Mar10).

The teaser image seen above features some of the already known cast racing through rainbow road, so it’s safe to assume that the trailer will feature some more shots of it, but what we yet don’t know is if more of the movie’s overall plot will be revealed. Bowser is bad, and he’s to attack the Mushroom Kingdom, that much is clear, however, the first full trailer did seem to hint at a grander, more cosmic plot.

Peach mentions “a huge universe out there, with a lot of galaxies,” and we see Mario and Luigi being sucked through some sort of interdimensional portal. Furthermore, a promotional poster for McDonald’s Happy Meal toys in Japan, which did the rounds back in December, featured a blue Luma as an upcoming toy, and we’ve yet to see this character appear in any of the trailers so far.

Lumas first debuted in Super Mario Galaxy, and they’re heavily connected to space travel in the Mario universe. It could even be that Rosalina makes a cameo appearance in the movie, though perhaps that’s wishful thinking more than anything else.

One of the biggest points of contention for Nintendo fans ever since the movie’s first teaser was Chris Pratt’s performance as Mario, and though we’ve gotten some scattered words and grunts here and there (as well as his recreation of Mario’s iconic “Yahoo!”), they’ve yet to truly show off his voice in a tangible way. Hopefully, we’ll finally get to hear that on March 9.
