Strictly fans fume as Giovanni Pernice is paired with Amanda Abbington | TV & Radio | Showbiz & TV

Strictly Come Dancing fans are already fuming as Giovanni Pernice has been partnered with Sherlock star Amanda Abbington, leaving many disappointed.

The iconic BBC One dance series is back with the launch show pairing up the professional dancers with this year’s celebrity line-up.

Among the first to be matched this year was actress Amanda Abbington who has starred in Sherlock with Benedict Cumberbatch, Mr Selfridges, Safe and Desperate Measures.

Showing the moment she met her partner, Amanda went back to the set of Sherlock where she found clues such as a rose and a map of Italy, teasing as to who it could be.

When she saw dancer Giovanni Pernice waiting for her, dressed up in full detective gear, Amanda couldn’t contain her excitement but not everyone was as thrilled with the match.

Taking to X, formerly known as Twitter, fans couldn’t express their disappointment.

One fan wrote: “Still can’t believe Gio got Amanda”, followed by crying emojis, whereas a second posted: “Now why’d they do Giovanni dirty like that”.

Another joked: “Giovanni must have already booked holiday flights, hence the partner they assigned him.”

While a fourt added: “Gutted Amanda got Giovanni, will be switching over during her dances. I’ll replay clips of him dancing with Michelle Visage.”

Excitement has been building up for Strictly Come Dancing’s return for months, with Tess Daly and Claudia Winkleman back in the driving seats for 2023.

They will once again be joined by the critical yet fabulous judges Craig Revel Horwood, Motsi Mabuse, Anton Du Beke, and head judge Shirley Ballas.

It has already been confirmed that Strictly will also feature a tribute for its beloved former judge and champion ballroom dancer Len Goodman.

He sadly died of bone cancer aged 78 earlier this year with the stars leading a heartfelt tribute.

More to follow…

The focus of tonight’s episode though revolved around meeting the new celebrity line-up and getting them matched up with their professional partners.

Among the famous faces taking part this year include Les Dennis, Ellie Leach, Zara McDermott, Nigel Harman, and Jody Cundy.

But with the first live show airing next weekend, who is going to dazzle the judges, and who will turn out to be a flop?

Strictly Come Dancing returns next Saturday, September 23, at 6.15pm on BBC One.
